Cyanotypes
Atkins - Barker
Photographs of British Algae : Cyanotype imperfections
This is a photo book of different cyanotypes and experimentations. formed from different found materials from a rock pool. It was when Barker mistook a piece of cloth for seaweed, the starting the recovery of synthetic clothing from around the coastline of Britain for the next 10 years.
Two hundred and two different species of clothing and garments recovered from many beaches around the different coastlines in Britain. From these 21 beaches, the garments mimic different species of marine algae. Trying to raise awareness and attention to this issue of fast fashion and the over consumption of synthetic fabric/plastic clothing and things such as fast fashion as already mentioned which greatly impacts global climate change.
This book was in a way a collaborations wit Anna Atkins works and her Cyanotypes - after seeing Atkins works, the original copy of the book of Photographs of British Algae, Volume 1 in the Royal Society of London, Barker was inspired and at awe of the amount of intricate detail and significance. What she was also captivated by was the importance of science in the times and how we viewed science in the 1800s and changed our views upon science.
From this, Barker wanted to recreate something similar that would engage in how we look at science now and how we think about it and how we can engage with science more and the connections with modern day issues.

I like how through the cyanotypes she is raising awareness to modern-day issues we face which are quite big. What I'm going to do similar in my work is create cyanotype images from found objects, which is what I want to do in my work and collect different things from outside such as ferns and flowers.
The book itself, included 22 cyanotypes image pages and 8 cyanotype writing/text pages using original 1800s J Whatman paper that Atkins also used from the original turkey mill in Kent. What is included in the book, different ideas, thoughts and processes as well as thing that have been collected and found over a vast number of years and then been put and bound together and all of the different things have been put together over 10 years to create the book.
The book itself is a hardcover, but it is quite unusual for a photo book as it is a textured hard cover but its quite interesting. I'm going to experiment with how my cyanotypes will fit in and how I will present them and experiment with how they go along with other photographs.
